The Birds
The birds have started gathering up into bigger flocks. We are seeing Canada geese flying in flocks from 10 birds to up 50 birds now. The birds are hitting the freshly harvested fields in their normal morning feed and afternoon feed patterns and returning to traditional roost waters for overnight. The Mallard and Pintail ducks are building numbers as well. We are watching as the number in the fields build with each flock of Ducks and Geese arriving and making note of how we would plan to hunt each field.
The Snows
It is likely still still a week before we expect the first Snow Geese to arrive, then they will come by the tens of thousands. There are of course a few snows that seem to stick around through the summer, having become adopted members of a Canada Goose family. They will soon be joined by the tens of thousands of Snow Geese that stage in our region during their migration.
The Fields
Harvest activities are going strong and are providing the birds with their food sources. The peas are coming off first and will be the early target fields for the Geese with wheat and barley fields soon to follow. Harvest in the area are good yields which means we can expect the spilled grain in the fields to be plentiful as well.
The Gear
Decoy and blind prep, an annual tradition here at Honker Heaven, has been completed. All the maintenance and repairs, if needed, have been completed and all our gear is ready for the first field hunt. We have had our hands on every piece of equipment, batteries are charging for the motion decoys and e-calls, and we are ready to work the calls, hidden stealthily in our blinds.
The Anticipation
Every year we look forward with anticipation to the first group of hunters, and each group of hunters. We know we will see you soon.
